In fourth grade we are busy all year reading, writing, and exploring math, science and social studies.
Reading - Fourth grade students read a variety of books. They read, discuss and write about their reading. Some of the books they will read this year include: GREEN MOUNTAIN HERO, SONG OF THE TREES, BECAUSE OF WINN DIXIE, POPPY, MANIAC MAGEE, and many others. They have times during which they discuss their books in literature circle, led by the students themselves. This gives them the opportunity to develop comprehension and thinking skills. In March, they will read biographies and prepare for oral presentations during Famous People Day. In April, they will read and write poetry to celebrate National Poetry Month.
Writing - Students practice writing essays on a variety of topics. The "Painted Essay" is the format they use during Writing Workshop time. They also write fiction and poetry.
Math - Students study math using the "Investigations" program. They also practice math skills using Spectrum Math and DIMS questions.
Social Studies - Most of the fourth grade year is spent studying Vermont. Students learn about Vermont's history and geography. They will study the United States and develop a state report project using a variety of technology, such as Power Point, Kidspiration, Frames, etc.
Science - Fourth grade starts out the year with Starbase, a hands-on program studying matter, force, and motion. They will also study geology, the solar system, sound and light, and the systems of the human body.
Technology - Students will use individual laptops as KES becomes a 1-to-1 school. Some of the programs they will use include Prezi, Google Docs, and Google Earth. They wil create Power Point presentations, PodCasts, and iMovies. They will also work on their keyboarding skills using Type to Learn.
