Education is an important part of the KES Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program. The videos in the link above, the "Traffic Safety" activity books sent home on 6/3/2013 and walks to school are fun ways to encourage safe walking. To continue our safety education, KES is incorporating Walk and Bike Smart curriculums into the KES health classes.
However, an effective STRS program is more than just providing safety education and encouraging kids to walk or bike. The SRTS Team used input from many sources, including the parent surveys completed last fall, to develop a KES Travel Plan that addresses all “5 E’s” (Encouragement, Education, Enforcement, Engineering and Evaluation). The DRAFT plan with select appendices is posted in the menu on the right side of this page. For those of you who like to cut to the chase, a two page overview of the proposed actions in the DRAFT plan also is posted in the menu on the right side of this page. The DRAFT plan has been reviewed by the Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans), the Selectboard, Planning Commission, Parks and Recreation Commission, KES School Board, KES Staff and parents. We are incorporating everyone's input into a finalized plan that will be posted on this page.
KES joined the Vermont Safe Routes to School Program as a basic member in the Fall of 2012. The KEEPERS, School Board, KES Staff and Killington Town have been very supportive and involved in the program from the start. Thanks to all their support and your fantastic participation in both the parent survey last fall and the May 1st Intergenerational Walk and Roll to School Day last spring, KES achieved the BRONZE partnership level in the spring. Then with our June 2013 walk to school combined with all the SRTS planning work done over the summer, we achieved a SILVER partnership level this fall. Way to go!
